Outdoor solar lighting uses the same process to generate power as the solar panels you may see on the roofs of residential homes and even some commercial businesses. Outdoor solar lighting is pretty interesting in that it uses photovoltaic cells (solar cells) to collect and convert solar energy into electricity. It does so by utilizing what are called semiconductors that absorb the sun’s light which then interacts with other internal and very intricate parts to create electricity. This freely manufactured electricity flows to an internal battery that in turn powers the light that you see glowing at night. Solar lighting technology can only create electricity by coming into direct contact with the sun’s light. This light energy is stored and is what essentially powers that battery at night when the sun is not present.
In order for the internal batteries of solar fixtures to maintain their charge and fully function at night, they need to be in a location where they’re receiving direct sunlight for the vast majority of the day. When the solar cells only receive partial sunlight during the day like sunlight in the shade, then they will either provide dim lighting or full lighting for a shorter period of time at night. To ensure that outdoor solar lights don’t waste their stored light energy, they have photo sensors that measure the light levels. Each unit has their own photo sensor and they function by telling the unit when the sun is setting and when dawn has arrived for the purpose of saving it’s stored light energy.
